Competency Statement

To ensure a well-run, purposeful program that is responsive to participants needs.
The observation tool that I have provided for Resource V is used to assess the developmental growth in Discovery Preschool children. It is designed to assist teachers in observing, recording and understanding a child’s skills, knowledge, behavior and accomplishments. It allows both parents and teachers to understand what children know and can do. Assessments are completed every fall, winter and spring with parent-teacher conferences to follow. Parents and teachers use these conferences to discuss the assessment.

Observation and documentation are important parts of program management because it allows parents and teachers to discuss what children are learning and understanding. There are five areas that are assessed; physical and motor development, social and emotional development, approaches toward learning, language and communication skills and cognition/ general knowledge. Teachers use these assessments to record progress over time. It allows them to see how each child is developing which area, if any, parents and teachers need of focus more on. It also helps teachers provide developmentally appropriate lessons and materials for the children.

I ensure that I am accurately and objectively observing and tracking each child’s developmental and learning progress by providing lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate. The assessment is not completed by testing the children. I use my observations and collect classwork don by the children to assess them. I also constantly interact with the children and set up activities that enable the children to demonstrate specific skills and integrate them into everyday activities. For example, while outside with the children, I will play catch with the children. I will observe if they can catch, throw, and kick a ball. I also ask them various questions throughout the day like, “What color is the school bus?” or “Can you tell me what shape this cracker is?” I record all my observations on index cards and place each one in the child’s portfolio. Assessments are a very important tool for both parents and teachers to monitor a child’s knowledge and development. With this documentation parents and teachers can work together to guide children into becoming well- rounded individuals.

Competency statement

In 1996 I graduated from Michigan City High School in Michigan City, IN. After graduation I was not able to go right off to college since I was a teen mother. So, instead I immediately began working for a clothing store named Ms. D’s Merchandise. There I was responsible for determining marketing strategies, informing customers about new and incoming merchandise, formulating prices, and maintaining store staff. Working for a small business I was able to acquire customer service skills, tactfully deal with customers, numeracy, initiative, ability to work under pressure, and cultural awareness. Those skills prepared me for the many of the experiences that I would encounter at other jobs. After working there for about 8 months I decided to try something new. I began working at the Life Care Center, a nursing home. There I was a full-time dietary aide, assistant cook, and head cook. I was an employee there for two years. My responsibilities were preparing food items and assembling ready foods for patient trays, setting tables for the elderly, maintaining the kitchen area, ensuring proper preparation/portioning/determining quality of food, and supervising dietary aides.

As you know working in this type of atmosphere conflicts may arise. May it be mistakes made by kitchen staff, staff unsatisfied with hours available or simply employees being angry about staying over when others arrive late for their shift. These all require some level of assertive conflict resolution skills. Responding to the needs of your staff in a timely manner, actively listening, remaining calm and fair at all times worked well in this type of atmosphere. Next, in August of 1998 I began working for the state as a correctional officer at the Indiana State Prison. Since I worked in a customer service setting, I learned from prior experience how to resolve conflicts in the workplace in many ways. This experience formed the foundation for many endeavors in the future. There, I was responsible for the safety and security of offenders, instruct inmates and maintain records of offender movement, check inmate for possible contraband, make periodic patrols of quarters and work areas, initiate count, and be familiar with daily operation of each assignment. Working in a controlled setting staff must work together to reduce conflict among offenders as well as each other. Personal interpretation plays a huge role in conflict within this facility.

Each year the staff received 16 hours of in-service training covering topics like self defense, self control, and how to maintain situations and gain control. Bringing everyone together was the goal since there were many factors separating the culture; like rank, gender, profession, and ethnic groups. Also, documenting daily movement and activities reduced conflict as well. Mainly because documenting helps to avoid any legal action or disputes of judgement. On one occasion I was given an assigned to work in a tower with no heat for several weeks. The control officer had a history of partially do his job. I turned in several work orders to address the heat issue and I also wrote him up for failure to inspect the towers before assigning them. Since he and I could not resolve the issue I utilized the chain of command and went to his supervisor. The supervisor immediately resolved the heat and scheduling issue. In 2001 I became interested in being a hair stylist. I knew living in Michigan City would not allow me to gain financial stability since it was such a small place. So I moved to Indianapolis. After researching the cosmetology schools in Indianapolis I decided to attend Kayes’ School of Cosmetology. There I received a diploma for cosmetology, esthetics, and manicuring in 2004. After graduation I was hired by The Elizabeth Arden Salon, they hired me as a manicurist/hair.

What is conflict? Webster’s Dictionary (Merriam-Webster, 1983) defines conflict as sharp disagreement or opposition of interest or ideas. In other words, what I want does not match what you want, or could it be that you are so much alike that you can’t agree on anything? According to David Hardcastle, Professor of Social Service Administration at the University of Maryland in Baltimore (Hardcastle, 2004), co-workers who get on one another nerves, don’t clash with everyone at the office, just the ones they’re most like. To discover why conflict occurs, Dr. Hardcastle conducted a survey of characteristics of co-workers that often have disputes with others in the workplace. In conclusion, he found that employees that don’t get along are usually more alike than different and that all conflicts at some level,since people perceive that these are incompatible goals held by at least 2 people who are interfering with what the other person wants. According to (Bell & Daly, 1984), before a conflict is carried too far, people often assure each other that they want the same thing or that they are headed in the same direction. This may be because both parties are trying to find common ground. However, in true conflict people not only want different things but believe that another is interfering with their goal attainment. Here are some core issues that arise in many conflicts:

· Self-esteem underlies all conflicts
In every conflict, someone’s sense of self is at stake.

· People engage in conflict when they feel demeaned, when they try to regain a sense of being a good person and when they’re hurting from a previous struggle. Many people are not interested in winning or losing; they just need to feel better about themselves.

· The most significant conflict is when someone feels as though their being taken advantage of. This can occur when dedication and commitment cause an individual to work later hours, but then they are not compensated for it.

· Lastly, conflict can occur when the employee has unrealistic expectations of what their position entails, or of being misunderstood in the workplace. Dr. Tony Fiore mentioned in an article (Fiore, T, 1999, Business know how, several steps a manager can take to reduce workplace conflict. You will find them listed below:

1) Managers should focus on communication skills, both in terms of how they communicate and how they are teaching their employees to communicate with each other. This would include using I statements instead of you language.

2) Managers need to increase their listening skills. Active listening involves things like trying to understand what the individual is saying, repeat it for clarity and then let communicating to them that you did indeed understand what they said.

3) Establish healthy boundaries, without boundaries, there will be conflict and squabbles, power struggles and all kinds of circumstances. Try being more empathetic and compassionate toward your employees or co-workers, without crossing the lines of being their friend.

4) Emotional intelligence, develop skills to be more effective, by teaching people to combine both intelligence and emotions in the workplace.

5) Lastly, set up behavioral consequences to be used with truly uncooperative employees who are unwilling to change. This means explaining expectations to the employee and the outcome if the problematic behavior continues. Rosemary McCaslin a professor of Social Work at California State University San Bernardino believes in involving the office veterans to assist with the mediation process. Being the seasoned employee, they are usually looked at as the mentors and are able to explain the workplace expectations to all parties involved. By utilizing this process, you are able to resolve conflicts before they escalate. Speak to all parties involved in the conflict. This can often supply the insight you need in regards to the dispute. You also ask others that are familiar with their characters and habits to help give you visualize the full picture. Finding out what each party wants and what their goals are can also give you the full picture of what caused the dispute and how this conflict can be resolved. Helping them to understand one another can alleviate some of the tension. A careful analysis of other people’s interest and values, as well as your own, will require empathetic listening and respectful speaking. Together, when people use dialogue to talk with each other, they will discover new ideas, new possibilities and new potential solutions to create a better working environment.

Competency Statement

To maintain a commitment to professionalism by conducting myself in a professional manner at all times. Every day I get to be part of all my students and their families lives and I hope to influence them with positive attitude, great energy and provide them with knowledge that they can use as building blocks for their future education .I have an understanding of my job expectations and every day I make decisions based on knowledge about age appropriate early childhood practices. CSVI a – The reason I chose to become an early childhood professional is because I like to be part of the learning process and see how the children benefit from the program we provide. I believe that early education is very important for children and I take a great pride in the work I do every day. With my art education and ability to be very creative, I am able to use it in my classroom and create artistic wall displays, bulletin boards, interesting art projects, and colorful teaching tools for the children in our program. Every day we provide them with paint , paintbrushes ,crayons, scissors ,glues, colorful papers and many more craft supplies and they go to create their own very special piece of art.

This is one of many activities in the classroom that helps them to develop variety of different skills they need for everyday life and I get to be part of it. I understand that as their teacher I am a big influence on them and every moment of the time they spend in the school and I provide them with loving and positive environment. Every day, while they are away from their families, they get to spend a day filled with learning carefully planned fun activities, and I am very happy to be a part of that. At the end of every school year I’m pleased to see all of our students to move on to the next level of their education and I’m proud that I was able to help them learn basic skills and prepare them socially and emotionally for next step in life. I am lucky I picked profession I truly love. CSVI b – The most important indicators of professionalism that I possess are the ability to continue to educate myself about the age appropriate way to teach children and be able to incorporate it to our program every day. The knowledge about child development and early childhood education keeps changing over the years and I believe all teachers have to continue to educate themselves about new ways to teach children in our care.

Over the past seven years I have been assisting a wonderful teacher who was older and had been using the early childhood education practices she has learned thirty years ago. Last year our pre-school went through big change and we started using the Creative Curriculum which was not familiar to us at all. We have been working very hard on the new of way using age-appropriate, early childhood practices. It has been great experience for me to learn the new techniques to teach children their basic skills every day, and I get very excited to come up with new and fun ways for them to learn. Every year in the summer I attend many different workshops and trainings that help my professional growth. Another important indicator of professionalism that I posses is to conduct myself in a professional manner. Every single day I arrive at work on time, with a positive attitude, smile on my face and dressed appropriately for the responsibilities I have. I have an understanding that I represent our school and I have to use good judgment when making decisions that affect children in our pre-schools.

Competency Statement

To establish and main a safe, healthy learning environment

I believe it is important to establish and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment by keeping my center and play ground area clean and free of the things that are harmful to my children. I believe the first steps to encourage learning is to keep a clean and safe environment, that my children’s minds will be stimulated and will meet there individual learning styles.

My goal is to encourage my children to follow healthy and nutritional eating habits. I do this by promoting foods that are healthy and clean for my children to eat. I teach about and have my children sample all types of healthy food to help our bodies grow strong. My children and I have helped encourage in changing the centers menu to make the menu fun, colorful, yet healthy and nutritious, that meet the needs of those children with a special diet. One thing I would love to try to do more of would to have the children service them self as a family style meal.

In the functional area of establishing a learning environment my goal for my children is to try to make sure that my classroom is fun, safe, organized and set up for success. In my classroom I have seven different learning areas: art, science, blocks, dramatic play, manipulative, writing and library. All labeled with words and pictures. I try to set up stimulating learning centers so that my children can move freely with age appropriate material for their self-directed play and learning. I like to provide a high activity, low stress environment where my children can learn and play happily together. I do have to mesh some centers onto one shelf due to limited space in my classroom. If I could I would change the layout of the room and add some more space for each center.

My weekly plan is not designed by myself but by my company. I believe it is a very effective lesson plan, age appropriate and fun. I do get to add or make changes to it as needed to make it work for special needs. I try to involve my parents in helping provide props or anything they have laying around the house that we can use to make our centers more life like. My lesson plan focus areas include circle time, language/reading activities, creative expression, science/math, music and movement, gross motor, dramatic play and sensory. I try to make every lesson fun and hands on so that I know my children are grasping the learning part of the lesson.

Competency Statement

To ensure a well-run, purposeful program that is responsive to participant needs To ensure a well-run, purposeful program that is responsive to participant needs, there are many standards I exercise within my classroom. My teaching practices include following a pre-set calendar populated with planned activities. It is important to have a plan for each day so that we can transition the children easily from one event to another. Children react better to their schedule when they know what to expect and have a sense of control over their routine. I also believe it is important for the families to know what to expect each day. My calendar includes activities that contribute to both short term and long term goals that apply to the class as a whole as well as to each individual child. My co-teacher and I are cooperative workers by sticking to a routine while remaining flexible to the needs of our classroom and students. We also share ideas, listen to one another, express opinions in a respectful manner, and welcome suggestions and ideas from the rest of our co-workers.

I am also a competent organizer through keeping accurate records, family information, and forms in a readily available filing system in my classroom. I make daily notes on each child to be able to correctly communicate with parents about their child’s day. I also keep student files up to date with medical information, emergency contacts, family dynamic information, and assessments of ability. Assessments through observations and documentation are an integral part of program management. By documenting anything noteworthy, I am able to keep clear and accurate records. If I am ever questioned by a parent, I can recount a clear memory using notes I have written in the moment. On a serious note, documenting everything, especially incidents and accidents, can help protect me and my school legally.

It is very important to be an effective communicator to co-workers, administration, and families, and observations and documentation assist in correct messages. By keeping accurate records, I am also able to evaluate my students and create appropriate lesson plans for them that will meet their needs and help them grow academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. I am able to see their development as well as any regression or stalling in their achievements. I am ensuring that I am accurately and objectively observing and tracking each child’s developmental and learning progress by observing my co-teacher assess their abilities in a natural environment and taking notes.

I also take pictures to add to their portfolios, not only for further documentation, but also for the parents to be able to see their child in the moment. In addition to pictures, I also add accomplished work to their portfolios including completed projects and formal assessments I have conducted throughout the school year. By practicing accurate record keeping, I am further able to have tangible evidence for discussion during parent teacher conferences.

Competency Statement

To advance physical and intellectual competence I teach according to this standard so my students will have a good start on their physical and intellectual education. I prepare age appropriate learning experiences in all areas to enrich their learning environment. CSII a: I choose riding tricycles to aide in my classes’ physical development. Riding tricycles requires upper body and lower body strength as well as works on hand eye coordination. I feel like this is vital developmental milestone for preschoolers and is also fun. I have enough for every child so that there is no conflict with other classmates, and the kids really enjoy it. CSII b: I think the alphabet matching cards I used in my language and literacy learning experience help support my classes’ cognitive development by mixing up the letters and pictures and encouraging them to think and look through the cards to find the right one.

The can use try trial an error, but eventually they will memorize and learn the letters. CSII c: I used apple print painting from my creative learning experience to help support my class in their creative development. They get to use slices of apple to paint any picture they would like, using all sorts of different colors. They can make apple prints or use the apple prints to paint a house if they choose. The apple slices are perfect for their hand size and there is enough apple slices for each color of paint. There are many ways I help promote communication and language development of my class. I ask them open ended questions, and encourage them to use their words like “are you thirsty”, “what is wrong” and “how would you play with that?”.

We also read a lot of stories and then I encourage them to retell it for me. I let them use a flannel board to retell the story in their words. We write stories together, and then let them draw the pictures. In my classroom we use pictures and words to label the shelves and toys. This helps them know that everything has a place. We also use name tags in each center, this is a great way to set boundaries and helps them use communication to problem solve. I also encourage them to talk to each other when they are having conflicts instead of always wanting to tell the teacher. I think all these examples help to promote and support language and communication in my classroom.

Competency Statement

To maintain a commitment to professionalism, I believe in creating an environment of excellence with colleagues, students, parents and our community. I am committed to bring the best service to each individual by learning and respecting their cultural backgrounds. I will create age appropriate lesson by keeping in mind of each individual child needs. I maintain confidentiality by good record keeping, not sharing sensitive information but keeping families conversation private and only share with appropriate staff.

I informed every parent that I am a mandated reporter and follow the state policy in reporting any child abuse or neglect. My personal goals are to continue to grow by attending professional development courses to expand my knowledge in early childhood development best practices. I believe my most important indicators of professionalism I posses are arriving early to work to prepare materials and ensuring that everything is in place for student’s arrival. I collaborate with my peer in planning of most skills using a daily routine. We discuss students’ goals and achievements and I make recommendations for future interventions. In my opinion, my ability to reach each learner brings about desired outcomes of student engagement. I have a high sense of efficacy and a passion for teaching. Therefore, I am constantly searching for best practices to implement in my classroom. I am willing to take more risks, set higher standards for myself and my students and provide the potential for higher academic gains among my students.

Competency Statement

To advance physical and intellectual competence… It is essential to the growth and development of every child to advance their physical and intellectual needs. Preschool age children have a short attention span. They learn by example, and learn by activities that are interesting to them. I keep their minds fresh by including fun games in the weekly lesson plan that improves their physical, cognitive and creative development. I do this on a daily basis. I sing songs, read books and talk about shapes, colors, numbers and letters.

I encourage all children to be active, especially, during outside play. I provide the children with opportunities to develop their upper body strength by rolling balls, swinging, and throwing bean bags. I also focus on running, jumping, and balancing to help strengthen their lower bodies. At the center, we come up with all sorts of active games to build up both gross and fine motor skills. I included a game called “Sleeping Giants” into my weekly plan that is a combination of pretend play and physical activity.

The “Sleeping Giants” game stimulates imagination and multi-directional movement while strengthening their heart, lungs, muscles, and agility. During the game, children will use their large motor skills to run or jump while listening for me to say “Sleeping Giants”. When I call out, the children will try their hardest to stay quiet to represent a sleeping giant. Then when I call out “Walking Giants” the game continues and allows the children to be active and freely express themselves.

Competency Statement

There are many significant attributes of children’s lives including, physical and intellectual competence. Although children learn at a different pace than one another, once they start to age their physical and intellectual skills increase. No child is considered “smarter” because he or she might be more advance in one area than another child. Every learning skill that children are grasping on a daily basis has room for improvement. IIaI chose ice skating as creativity for one of the nine learning experiences. Not only is ice skating a fun activity but it also helps with physical development of the child.

Ice skating increases lower body strength by working the muscles in the legs. When learning how to ice skate you are actually teaching how to balance yourself. In this day age, children aren’t as physically active as before in previous generations and by doing an ice skating activity it could lead a child to a lifelong sport. IIbAnother one of my nine learning experiences I chose for my resource collection is language and literacy. The goal is to pronounce 3 letter “at” words such as cat, bat, hat using flash cards, letter pronunciation CD Rom, and bingo board and chips.

This activity helps with cognitive development by knowing the sound awareness of the letters and reasoning on what letter you would pronounce first, second, and third. IIcMaking beaded bracelets with colored beads and string is a fine motor skill which teaches hand and eye coordination. I decided to make colorful bracelets with elbow macaroni noodles because not only is it a fine motor skill but it is creative as well. Using noodles instead of beads teaches my students that there are alternatives when you don’t have the original material.

My students get creative by painting the noodles different colors and decorating them with glitter and rhinestones. You could also use other noodles to give your bracelets a different shape or size. Ziti, penne, rotelle, and rigatoni are other styles of noodles that could be used to make your own personal pasta jewelry. I give my children options because it helps to express their creative side and how they view their imagination. IIdProper communication is important when it comes to language development. You have to use more than one communication strategy to promote language development.

Some of the ways I teach to help language development children from baby to adolescent can learn from. I always talk clearly and not too fast, I think that is the one thing you should always do when trying to develop better language skills. If you talk to your students with scrambled words then they won’t be able to comprehend on what’s being said. I also read books and point to the pictures with my children asking “what do they see” or “what is happening” in the book so I can not only see if their paying attention, but to see if how they are pronouncing pictures shown on the page.

Music CD’s also helps with language development. I sing songs with my students, getting them to use as many words as possible mastering one word at a time. There is one bilingual child in my classroom and English is his second language. Since English is his second language make sure that I talk to him clearly and use flash cards with pictures. I also spark up conversations with him about his interests and home life so there is a sufficient amount of the English language being used to help the growth of his language development.
